Five Ways Michael Bay Can Change 'Transformers 4'

It's Michael Bay's American right to sign on for "Transformers 4." Who could say no to all that money (even if the guy probably doesn't need any at this point)? But while the "Transformers" movies have consistently made bank, there's no doubt they've become somewhat creatively stagnant. Sure, you can cynically remark that they were never that great, but the second and third movies ladled on the gratuitous characters, abundant explosions and confusing narrative. So yeah Bay can do more of the same if he wants, but here are five baby steps he might take in order to change things up. » 1. Lose the Beef. With all due respect to Shia LaBeouf, the saga of Sam Witwicky has gone about as far as it can. Even Mr. LaBeouf agrees on this point. Three movies in a row, Sam has been acting alternately brave and cowardly (with quips thrown in for good measure), and while LaBeouf has filled his role admirably, it's time to let Sam go and introduce a new cast. Producers seemed to agree about the temporal role of "Transformers" characters when they bounced Megan Fox out of the third film; why not go a step further and get rid of everyone not just Sam. Starting from scratch would be the easiest way to pour some humanity back into the series. » 2. Scale Down the Robots. Over three "Transformers" films, we've seen dozens of Autobots and Decepticons. Some of them, like Optimus Prime, are time-honored classics. Others, like Skids and Mudflap, are not. In order to keep things from getting too jumbled and generic, Bay should consider paring down the roster by at least half. Focus on creating distinct personalities and visual styles, so that audiences will care more about what they're seeing. It might hurt the toy department's revenue, but creatively, it'll be a lot easier to work with. » 3. Dark Does Not Equal Serious. I mean, this is "Transformers," not "The 400 Blows." Hollywood often tends to think audiences want dark material, but that's not true they just want a good movie, whether it's dark or silly, happy or brooding or whatever. The more Bay tries to burrow into some cave of gravitas (foreign policy, ancient Egyptian history), the goofier the series looks to people who remember that this is a movie based off a toy line. » 4. Less bad explosions, more good explosions! Self-explanatory, we think. » 5. Unicron, please. You want to make the scope bigger? Create a plot where the Autobots have to take on Unicron. Revealing the evil planet in all its gigantic glory would be a visual highlight of the series, and it would raise the stakes past the typical here's-a-bigger-robot-to-destroy escalation. Fans will be stoked, casual filmgoers will be impressed, kids' minds will be blown. That's the way to do it, no? Tell us what you think of Michael Bay returning for "Transformers 4" in the comments section and on Twitter!

Once

A NY Theater Workshop presentation of the musical in 2 functions with music and lyrics by Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova book by Enda Walsh, in line with the film written and directed by John Carney. Directed by John Tiffany, movement by Steven Hoggett.Guy - Steve Kazee Girl - Cristin Milioti Eamon - David Abeles Ivonka - Claire Candela Andrej - Will Connolly Reza - Elizabeth A. Davis Da - David Patrick Kelly Baruska - Anne L. Nathan Svec - Lucas Papaelias Bank Manager - Andy Taylor Ex-Girlfriend - Erikka Walsh Billy - Paul Whitty Emcee - J. Michael ZygoOnce isn't enough: "Once" is the fact that rare type of musical which theater enthusiasts may wish to see again. The 2007 independent film from Ireland -- designed for about $150,000, having a worldwide gross of $20 million -- continues to be artistically broadened and modified for that stage, also it calculates impeccably. Songwriters Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova (who starred together within the movie) have became a member of playwright Enda Walsh and also the "Black Watch" team of director John Tiffany and choreographer Steven Hoggett to produce a rhapsodic, unique stage musical. Machinations for any quick Broadway transfer are going ahead, with strong prospects. Bittersweet love story informs of the un named guy (Steve Kazee) and girl (Cristin Milioti) who during the period of per week meet making beautiful music together -- which music proves more beautiful than a lot of that which you hear uptown around the Rialto. Song "Falling Gradually" has already been well-known, getting won the happy couple an Oscar, quite a few the tunes equal it, including "If You Would Like Me" and "The Hill." "Once" is unusual, without a doubt: There is no orchestra. The stars themselves play instruments throughout, less a directorial stunt but being an intrinsic area of the storytelling. What this means is as much as eight guitars playing together, which -- combined with violin, viola and voice -- proves remarkably effective. Eight from the 13 film tunes are maintained, having a couple of additions. Playwright Walsh, for his part, holds true to John Carney's script but has broadened some subsidiary roles into full figures. Walsh ("Misterman") has additionally added humor "Once," for those its moody romancing and atmospheric color, is extremely funny. Tiffany grabs the aud in the opening, once the story springs from the pre-show jam session. Hoggett ("American Idiot"), meanwhile, provides arresting movement for his non-ballroom dancers. Within the first act finale, the music artists grow so engrossed that they're magnetically attracted using their chairs, dancing in formation while still playing -- the cellist. (This same song, "Gold," is later reprised a cappella.) Orchestrator/music supervisor Martin Lowe warrants credit for converting the tunes to the level the techniques and answers are answer to the general success. There's additionally a Broadway-quality physical production from veterinarians Bob Crowley ("The Coast of Paradise") and Natasha Katz ("Follies"). Crowley has developed a massive Dublin barroom, that also works as a liquor bar prior to the show and also at intermission. The walls are packed with fifty-nine frosted mirrors, that the designers selectively use to mirror the experience. Crowley's costumes for Dublin poor and Czech immigrants are simply right, while Katz's touches incorporate a dazzling nightscape with a few fiber optic sleight-of-hands. Two leads are exceptional. Kazee ("110 within the Shade") constitutes a fine leading guy, pleasant and attractive but offerring the character's inner anguish when he sings. Milioti can also be perfect because the straightforward and blunt heroine she plays the part very well you question whether she is actually a Czech import. (She's from Nj.) Both stand out as music artists too. Paul Whitty, Andy Taylor and David Patrick Kelly stick out one of the excellent ensemble, together with Elizabeth A. Davis for her acting and her viola abilities. Lest one question how this intimate affair would translate for Broadway, it's worth observing the show includes a large cast of 13, twelve very-much-in-evidence music artists along with a full-sized physical production that appears too wide for many more compact uptown houses. Still, it is the tender love story and also the soaring tunes which make "Once" a champion.Sets and costumes, Bob Crowley lights, Natasha Katz seem, Clive Goodwin music supervision/orchestrations, Martin Lowe production stage manager, Bess Marie Glorioso. Opened up 12 ,. 6, 2011, examined 12 ,. 1. Runs through Jan. 15. Running time: 2 Hrs, 20 MINS. Contact the range newsroom at news@variety.com

Pols put forth dueling spectrum bills

A proposal to reshuffle the broadcast airwaves to free up more spectrum space for wireless and mobile devices could move forward in Congress this week. House lawmakers unveiled two dueling bills that would allow the government to incentive auctions in which stations can voluntarily give up spectrum and share in some of the proceeds with the government when the airwave is put up for sale to the highest bidder. The idea of such "incentive" auctions was proposed as part of one of FCC chairman Julius Genachowski's signature initiatives, the National Broadband Plan, designed to greatly expand access and reach of the Internet and wireless services in the U.S. Broadcasters have been wary of the idea of an incentive auction, warning that, even though stations could choose on their own whether to give up their spectrum space, they could still face being placed in different spots in the channel lineup as the spectrum is "repacked" to make room for wireless space. Rep. Greg Walden (R-Oregon), chairman of the House suncommittee on Communications and Technology, unveiled a bill on Tuesday that includes conditions in which broadcasters and cable systems would be able to draw on up to $3 billion in relocation costs if they are forced to move. The FCC also would have to "make all reasonable efforts" to preserve a stations' reach, and prohibits the FCC from forcing a station to move from UHF TO VHF. The VHF band is less desirable for delivery of digital services. Gordon Smith, president of the National Assn. of Broadcasters, called Walden's bill "a major step forward" in ensuring that stations are protected. "Our position remains unchanged since this debate began: NAB has no quarrel with voluntary spectrum auctions so long as non-volunteer broadcasters and our viewers are not punished." Meanwhile, House Democrats on the Energy and Commerce Committeem including Rep. Henry Waxman (D-Calif.) and Rep. Anna Eshoo (D-Calif.) introduced their own version of the legislation, which also calls for voluntary auctions that include safeguards for broadcasters who do not choose to give up their airwaves. It also includes provisions that allow stations to recoup the costs of relocation to additional channels, as well as other restrictions on the FCC's moves. The NAB was still reviewing the Democrats' proposal and had no immediate comment. Walden has scheduled a markup on his legislation on Thursday. Both bills call for establishing a wireless broadband public safety network. The Senate Commerce Committee already has passed legislation that includes provisions for voluntary incentive auctions. GALLERY: Oprah Winfrey Wins, Oscar Hopefuls Celebrate at 2011 Governor's Ball

Despite what could only be described as the week from PR hell, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences had to take at least a little comfort — OK, a lot of comfort — knowing that it had its second most vital annual event to look forward to during the weekend: The Governors Ball, where Oprah WInfrey, James Earl Jones and makeup artist Dick Smith were bequeathed honorary Academy Awards. Winfrey, who received the Academy’s Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, delivered an emotional acceptance speech invoking both the challenges of her upbringing and a current Oscar contender giving voice to those days. “It is unimaginable that I would be standing before you, voted by the Board of Governors,” Winfrey began before choking up. “Unimaginable,” she repeated several times to a standing ovation. “When I say, ‘Thank you,’ the ‘thank you’ comes from a place even deeper than I know.” Over at our sister site Deadline, Pete Hammond offered this bit from Winfrey’s speech (excised from the Academy’s unembeddable YouTube video): “When I saw The Help and read the book, it was my story. My grandmother was a maid. Her mother was a maid. Her mother before her was a slave. My mother was a maid. This is unimaginable… I will keep this Oscar on my desk to remind me to use our lives in service of one another. For me this Oscar will represent love from all of you.” Jones, who is presently appearing opposite Vanessa Redgrave in Driving Miss Daisy in London, sent his regards via satellite, while makeup kingpin Rick Baker led the tributes to his friend and mentor Dick Smith. The room, meanwhile, was filled with many hopefuls from this year’s Oscar crop (and, well, Sean Young); browse their likes in Movieline’s 2011 Governors Awards gallery. [Photos: Getty Images]

"Advocacy for him and too many kids like him has become a very important part of our fight to get him through this," she said. Kilberg and other industry insiders quickly set their sights on producing an event with a more of a fun-factor and relaxed atmosphere than the typical hotel ballroom dinner. The blue theme is keeping with the color associated with Autism Speaks, the nation's largest autism science and advocacy org. Incorporating music into the evening was important as so many kids on the autism spectrum who struggle with verbal skills have such a powerful emotional response to music. Shanahan's connections helped the organizers enlist McLachlan and other surprise guests. "We wanted to do something that would move people and get their attention but do it in a really fun, accessible way," Kilberg says. "We really want to be one of those tentpole events where people go not because they feel obligated but because they're really looking forward to it, and because it's clearly doing a lot of good for a lot of kids who need it." Other bizzers involved with the event are CAA's Dave Bugliari and Andrea Lee Greenburg, a major fund-raiser for Autism Speaks along with her husband, WME's Ari Greenburg. Media Mogul Silvio Berlusconi Steps Down as Italy's Prime Minister

The Silvio Berlusconi era in Italian politics is coming to an end, with the media kingpin-turned-prime minister resigning his post Saturday after an eventful week that gave the mogul little choice but to give up power. our editor recommendsSilvio Berlusconi Era Likely to End Soon in ItalySilvio Berlusconi: I Intend to Serve Out My 2013 Term The move comes after the Mediaset television honcho suffered a biting rebuke earlier in the week by a coalition of Italian legislators that had previously supported the prime minister. The resignation was met with what the NY Times called "cheering crowds" in Rome. "This is the most dramatic moment of our recent history," Ferruccio de Bortoli, the editor of the Milan daily newspaper Corriere della Sera, told the NYT on Saturday. PHOTOS: Actors Who've Played Politicians As THR previously reported, Berlusconi had been defiant leading up to the vote, using the three Mediaset networks he controls and the three state-owned RAI networks to vow he would hold onto power and blasting his critics as "criminal" and "unpatriotic." But the media pundits predicted that Berlusconi would be forced to step down after the final votes were tallied. The move likely means the end a political career in which Berlusconi has led Italy for 11 of the last 17 years, all the while controlling the country's largest media empire. His reign over Mediaset -- and indirect control of RAI as prime minister -- has been a key tool in his grip on power, using it to mold public opinion and silence opposition. But it also has sparked complaints about a conflict of interest and led to lawsuits featuring allegations that he evaded paying taxes by using a kickback scheme on a movie rights deal, and that he paid a British lawyer to lie for him in court in an older case tied to Mediaset's film subsidiary Medusa. Why Hollywood Should Purchase the Dodgers (Analysis)

This story first made an appearance within the November. 18 problem from the Hollywood Reporter magazine.our editor recommendsTime Warner Cable Mulls Bid for L.A. Dodgers TV Privileges (Report)Dodgers Proprietors Frank and Jamie McCourt Achieve Divorce SettlementAmid Dodgers Chaos, Baseball Posts Attendance Rise in 2011Read the Fox Sports Suit Over Dodgers TV RightsFox Sports Chief Talks Dodgers TV Deal, National football league Coverage (Q&A) Why a Dodgers Auction Could Take advantage of Fox Sports of Huge amount of money When News Corp.'s Chase Carey told experts November. 2 that the organization wasn't thinking about purchasing the La Dodgers, I had been surprised. Why must Fox's parent company buy back a baseball team it offered to outgoing proprietors Frank and Jamie McCourt just seven years back? For the similar reason it bought the Dodgers in 1998: TV privileges. News Corp. compensated about $311 million to purchase the storied franchise in the O'Malley family included in a method to grow Fox Sports' regional systems in Los Angeles. It labored. Six years later, News Corp. chief Rupert Murdoch offered they towards the McCourts for $421 million, only after securing up TV privileges until 2013. The team, despite being hooked in personal bankruptcy because of the McCourts' personal investing and mismanagement, is believed to become worth $1 billion, the 3rd-most-valuable franchise in Mlb. That increasing value comes largely from -- you suspected it -- TV privileges. STORY: 10 Hollywood Gamers Who Could Purchase the La Dodgers Nowadays, for a lot of major-market sports qualities, media privileges count much more than every other bit of revenue. And who much better than a varied media company for example News Corp., Time Warner, Comcast or Disney to take advantage of individuals privileges? Let's the Dodgers' next TV deal is cautiously worth $135 million annually. That, coupled with ticket sales, which Forbes tabbed at $107 million for this year, a lot more than offsets the believed $100 million-also in player salaries, additionally with other expenses of running the club. Frank McCourt stated Fox was prepared to pay him nearly $3 billion for any 17-year TV deal (about $176 million annually) prior to being vetoed by Major league baseball. If your media company possessed they, it might still need to purchase individuals privileges, when you are the exclusive bidder would slash the cost making the $1 billion spent to purchase they appear like chump change. STORY:Frank McCourt to market the Dodgers Yes, you will find problems of possessing a golf club, for example managing a facility and having to pay star-player salaries. Individuals factors led to News Corp. dumping its team, as have Disney (La Angels), Tribune (Chicago Cubs) and Time Warner (Atlanta Braves). But sports TV privileges have grown to be much more valuable recently because fans wish to watch games live, unlike just about any TV programming, whose ad value continues to be reduced by DVRs. That enables privileges deals to become more potent and longer, which provides media companies accustomed to the fleeting character of hit movies or Television shows a chance to rely on a lengthy-term revenue stream. STORY: L.A. Dodgers Apply for Personal bankruptcy Among Frank McCourt Drama Therefore if News Corp. isn't interested, should Time Warner, which lately bought the Opposing team' TV privileges for $3 billion, choose the kill? It's a move that will devastate Fox's regional investment, potential with no Opposing team in addition to UCLA and USC (both on the upstart Pac-12 Network). Stephen King's Rose Madder To Be Filmed

And the Dome TV series has a writerThere are relatively few novels by Stephen King yet to be filmed, and of those, most have been optioned and are languishing in development hell. Not so Rose Madder, which is so odd that nobody had seemed to want to go near it... until now. The brave souls at production company Palomar Pictures have just picked up Rose Madder as part of a three-film* deal with Grosvenor Park.King's fantastical 1995 story is part domestic saga, part fairytale and part Greek myth. It involves a woman on the run from her violent husband, who acquires a painting that she can actually go inside. Once through the looking glass she encounters the insane Rose Madder, and undertakes a quest to face down a minotaur in its labyrinth. And then it's back to the real world, where our heroine finds she may be inheriting Rose Madder's mental health issues. And there's some business with a magic tree. The adaptation is being penned by Naomi Sheridan, whose only previous writing credit seems to be In America, directed by her father Jim. Dolores Claiborne - a similarly atypical King melodrama - made for a solid two-hander for Kathy Bates and Jennifer Jason Leigh back in the 90s, but with its melding of kitchen-sink and mythical quest, Sheridan will have to work hard to stop Rose Madder from appearing head-spinningly peculiar oncsreen.Meanwhile on TV, Showtime's series based on King's Under The Dome has finally nabbed a new writer, in the form of Brian K Vaughan. It was previously reported that Smallville's Michael Green had the gig, but that now seems not to be the case. One of King's trademark, massive, small-town, multi-character stories, Under the Dome involves Maine suburb Chester Mill being suddenly separated from the outside world by an impermeable invisible barrier. Think The Simpsons Movie, but less yellow. Vaughan is clearly the man for this job, since he wrote 39 episodes of Lost. He's also a prolific and respected writer of comics, most notably Y: The Last Man and Ex Machina. And judging byDeadline's picture, he likes to dress as The Spirit.*The other two are remakes of the 2010 French hesit thriller Joseph And The Girl, and the 2001 Norwegian care-in-the-community comedy Elling.

Should the Academy Fire Brett Ratner as Producer of the Oscars?

During a post-'Tower Heist' Q&A session on Friday night in Los Angeles, director Brett Ratner said "rehearsing is for fags" when asked by an audience member if he rehearses scenes before filming. So, yeah, that's not good. Ratner has since apologized for his comments in a statement to The Wrap: I apologize for any offense my remarks caused. It was a dumb way of expressing myself. Everyone who knows me knows that I don't have a prejudiced bone in my body. But as a storyteller I should have been much more thoughtful about the power of language and my choice of words. Meanwhile, over at Grantland, Mark Harris is rallying for the Academy to relieve Ratner of his Oscar producing duties. I've had to listen to versions of every one of these mea-not-quite-culpas over the years and seriously, I'm no longer interested in patiently witnessing the slow arc of a public figure's learning curve. What I do care about is what the Academy does, which should be either to ask for and receive his resignation from the show or to drop him as the producer of a show that is supposed to represent the best the industry has to offer. There's not really a long, nuanced debate to be had about this. If he had used an equivalent racial or religious slur, the discussion would go something like, "You're fired." Apology or not. The same rule applies here. You don't get a mulligan on homophobia. Not in 2011. Grantland doesn't have a commenting system, but we do! And we are quite curious what you think about this situation. Keep in mind: if Ratner is fired, Eddie Murphy (who has his own controversial history with that particular slur from his comedy specials 'Delirious' and 'Raw') is probably gone. That shouldn't be a factor in a decision like this, but it kinda does -- which is also why it's very unlikely that Ratner will be fired. So, you're in charge of the Oscars. (Congrats!) Knowing that you may lose Murphy if you fire Ratner, what do you do? Is his apology enough, or is Harris right in demanding that Ratner step down or be replaced? Fire away in the comments section below. [via Grantland] [Photo: BAUERGRIFFIN] Follow Moviefone on Twitter Like Moviefone on Facebook RELATED

Packed with four sleeping rooms, 5.5 lavatories, a sleek designer kitchen and lots of space for outside entertaining, the home delivers signature California indoor/outside living. 'Zombieland' TV Series Within The Works

Great news and not so good news for "Zombieland" fans, beginning using the bad: it's searching more likely and more likely that people will not obtain a follow up towards the 2009 zombie action-comedy in the end. The main reason? Well, that is the good news appears like we are obtaining a TV series rather! NY Magazine reviews that "Zombieland" screenwriting duo Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick will work with Fox to build up one half-hour TV version from the publish-apocalyptic comedy. The show is apparently being eyed for that 2012-13 season, so more zombie-smashing action is possibly headed to the tv sets earlier than later. Adding further fuel towards the rumor of the TV series is comment from "Zombieland" producer Gavin Polone, who told NY Mag: "When the Television show goes, then your follow up will not happen." Obviously, this is not the very first time we have learned about the "Zombieland" authors dealing with a little-screen version of the story. Reese and Wernick spoke with MTV News regarding the subject at the begining of 2010, saying they always thought "Zombieland" ought to be a TV series. "Should you watch the film knowing that, you will notice some remains from the tv program,Inch stated Reese. "We now have the Zombie Kill each week, that was always meant to happen each week. The film finishes on the cliffhanger it does not possess a real resolution. [The films ending] is simply our men driving off in to the sunset for many new adventures. Thats because, thats the way the television pilot ended." Reese added at that time they would most likely recast 4 leads and introduce new figures regularly. That's all fine and dandy, but how will you possibly recast Woodsy Harrelson's Tallahassee unless of course, obviously, someone wants to ascertain if Josh Holloway has an interest? (Hey, just saying!) In other Reese and Wernick news, the "Zombieland" duo are just introduced to evolve a "Micronauts" movie for Hasbro, Vital and Bad Robot. Deadline has got the particulars. Inform us that which you think about this news within the comments section as well as on Twitter!

NBCs Bob Greenblatt Not Rushing To Wield Cancellation Axe On Playboy, Free Agents

There's been rampant gossips since NBC is deleting underperforming new series The Playboy Club and Free Agents, which have drenched 2 and three low-rated airings, correspondingly, losing double-amounts week-to-week. But despite speculation, word is NBC won’t be yanking any new series now as NBC chairman Bob Greenblatt desires to give all freshmen more hours. This is a departure from traditional network MO inside the situation of fall shows together with your underwhelming launches. A year ago, Fox’s Lone Star and ABC’s My Generation were canceled after 2 airings each. They came single. and 1.1 demo rating, correspondingly, before they were attracted. Now, Free Agents as well as the Playboy Club released single. together with single.3, correspondingly. But no matter the shows’ harsh ratings prospects, they are prone to get another chance. Word is always that Greenblatt desires to send an email for the creative community he is able to give their shows on NBC every possible chance to achieve success. (And people aren't even shows he'd developed.) Greenblatt arises from the cable world, where series get a season-long-term to find their footing before an option around the future is produced. Inside the details in the broadcast business, keeping a greater-finish drama or comedy round the air inside a 1 demo rating level for more than a number of days is prohibitive. But, since audiences continue being sampling shows and fine-tuning their viewing designs for your year, NBC want to restrain for the process to remain before sacking the finest underachievers. (Furthermore to Playboy and Free Agents, also in danger might be the network’s Prime Suspect, which opened up up getting a disappointing 1.9 18-49 rating the other day.) NBC’s Greenblatt shown similar persistence in mid-season with low-rated new comedy Perfect Couples, even though Paul Reiser show was canceled after 2 episodes since the broadly panned comedy started at 1.1 rating and dipped with a .9 inside the second airing. For Playboy Club, there is plenty of speculation the brand new John Williams prime time magazine might be eyed just like a alternative inside the Monday 10 PM slot. Because the new program is under ready yet, which causes it to be unlikely it might be summoned up immediately, it appears its premiere will probably be just before the first mid-season target date.

Disney Junior acing frosh year

When preschool-targeted "Jake and the Never Land Pirates" premiered in February as part of the Disney Channel's newly rebranded Disney Junior programming block, the network had only one program in the top 10 for its demo: the seventh-ranked "Mickey Mouse Clubhouse." But overnight, the network's fortunes changed. The first night of Jake's tanglings with Capt. Hook and Smee set ratings records for the channel among total viewers, kids 2-5 and boys 2-5. It demonstrated that what was once the Playhouse Disney block really did offer something different as the new Disney Junior, further bolstering plans to launch as a 24-hour channel in 99 million U.S. households in February 2012."The thing that became so clear to all of us was that storytelling with heart is just part of Disney's DNA," says Disney Junior Worldwide senior veep of original programming and general manager Nancy Kanter."How do you begin to foster a love of learning, of creative thinking, of problem solving? You do it through character and you do it through story, and that's really what we've defined as our brand that's distinct from some of the other brands," says Kanter, who was promoted to oversee the channel's worldwide operations in February.Disney Junior is already seen in 136 countries and territories around the world and is available in 21 languages, but Kanter says she and her team work hard to entertain while ensuring parents across many territories can immediately recognize the value in its programming.Country to country, there are small variations," she says. "There are some territories where the academic learning skills are a little more important than the emotional or social skills."In keeping with Disney's corporate focus on harnessing digital technology, Disney Junior is teaching on a multiplatform basis, through radio, TV and an extensive website with interactive games based on the programming. Kanter says that "social network moms" help shows find an audience much quicker than possible even five years ago."It's not just the moms on their block or on the playground -- they're talking to moms across the country," she says, pointing to the rapid social network boost that "Jake" received. When Disney Junior launches as a 24-hour channel in the United States, the programming will be a mix of live-action, animation and movies, but Kanter says the real challenge will be in dayparting the schedule. The 24-hour schedule will allow her to experiment with programming gentler shows in the 5 to 9 p.m. timeframe that wouldn't have been appropriate in a block on Disney Channel."In early morning, early afternoon, you're looking for shows that are very energetic and get your kids up and moving," she says. "Obviously, toward the end of the day, you're looking to do the opposite. No more jumping on the couch."Kanter has been with the network since 2001, but her previous experience in children's programming includes stints as an executive producer for Sesame Workshop -- where she produced the Emmy-winning special, "Elmo Saves Christmas" -- and as president of the children's entertainment website Bluecow.com. Until "Jake" took tots by storm, Kanter's former pint-sized hits included "Mickey Mouse Clubhouse," "Handy Manny" and "Little Einsteins."While she's looking forward to launching a host of shows for preschoolers next year, she says one lesson learned from "Jake" will stick with her. The episodes that test the best are the ones in which Jake does something nice for mean old Capt. Hook, which Kanter says shows that the audience is hearing a message of compassion. They're not out for revenge or one-upsmanship. They just want everyone to be happy," she says with a laugh.VARIETY JUNIOR Blasts from past power int'l kids sales | Books and toys aren't fail-safe TV fodder | Kids animation making bigger international play | Toons in transition | Pop go the platforms | Disney Junior acing frosh year | DQE seizes opportunity in Indian animation biz | Shingle dabbles in 'Baby' babble | Argentina teen fare evolves in post-Cris Morena era Contact Christy Grosz at

Latest GOP Debate Hits Rankings High

The apparently nightly Republican presidential candidate debates around the cable news systems have began to get traction within the rankings because the story lines one of the major gamers start to emerge (i.e., as Ron Perry and Mitt Romney distance themselves in the pack as management). Last evening’s Fox News/Google debate on Fox News Funnel was the entire year’s most-viewed debate yet, calculating 6.a million total audiences and 1.7 million audiences within the key 25-54 demographic because of its 9-11 PM ET time slot. That’s especially impressive because it beat the viewership amounts of countless new series airing around the competing broadcast systems throughout premiere week including NBC’s Prime Suspect.

Bon Iver

Presented by Live Nation. Performers: Justin Vernon, Sean Carey, Mike Noyce, Matt McCaughan, Rob Moose, Mike Lewis, Reginald Pace, Colin Stetson, C.J. Camerieri. Reviewed September 20, 2011.Bon Iver's Justin Vernon has consistently built upon the niche success of his 2008 debut album "For Emma, Forever Ago." In 2009, he released the critically-acclaimed "Blood Bank" EP, which revealed a spectrum of songs far more restless and sonically adventurous than was displayed on the lovelorn, pseudo-acoustic "Emma." Next came Kanye West, and the seemingly leftfield partnership that blossomed on West's transcendent 2010 "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy." Vernon added guest vocals and contributed songwriting to the album, which allowed him access and exposure to an incredibly broad base of pop music fans. As a result of these steady triumphs, 2011 has been a breakthrough year for Bon Iver. Tuesday's performance at the Gibson was an encore of sorts -- announced on the heels of a sold-out Monday date at the Shrine Auditorium. The theatre was full, but certainly not sold-out, with the top rafters nearly empty. The audience seemed lethargic in general, as though many had attended the prior evening's performance and were somewhat dubious about the idea of sitting through it again. As the lights dimmed, Vernon's 9-piece live ensemble took to the stage and immediately launched into "Perth" -- the opening track on the group's self-titled, 2011 full-length. At the song's core is a wiry electric guitar riff, which slowly gains momentum and ultimately releases in a triumphant swell of drums and horns. It is an abstract piece of pop music that is far more atmospheric than any of Vernon's early work. Live, the tune is a force to be reckoned with, making full use of the band and its various multi instrumentalists. Vernon's voice was razor sharp throughout the evening, shifting smoothly between a piercing falsetto and a wild, soulful drawl. The early portion of the set leaned heavily on the new album and showcased the overall dynamic range of his songwriting. "Wash" found Vernon channeling "Astral Weeks"-era Van Morrison, with unpredictable vocal incantations and an utterly romantic piano groove. "Holocene," was a study in patience and pacing, with horn players descending into subdued, free jazz squeaks, while the percussionists locked together in a focused snare and hi hat groove. "Beth/Rest," was given a blown-out, Peter Gabriel-esque reading, replete with epic, treated drum sounds and an emotional guitar solo. Many have criticized this track as a typical piece of ironic, internet-era reappropriation, but the conviction of Vernon's performance proved otherwise. He seemed truly possessed by the emotive power of the lyrics, extracting fresh life from the seemingly vacant sonic trappings of '80s Muzak purveyors. The latter portion of the set was loaded with older tracks and the band capped the night with an encore of "Emma" staples "Flume" and "Skinny Love." The crowd, though initially sluggish, seemed to quickly transform into a reverent congregation, suspended in awed silence for nearly all of the performance. Vernon was given complete freedom to employ pauses and musical downtime to the songs. These blank spaces and decrescendos heightened the dramatic effect and lent an intimate feeling to a seemingly more remote concertgoing experience. Contact the Variety newsroom at news@variety.com

Is Community Really Going to Be "Less Weird" This Year?

Joel McHale, Community "We're gonna have more fun and be less weird than the first two years combined!"So sings - yes, sings - the Greendale Community College study group as NBC's Community kicks off its third season. Fall Preview: Get scoop on your favorite returning showsThe flashy opening number speaks to creator Dan Harmon's plan for the third season, which he says won't be as stunt-episode heavy as the self-referential comedy has been in the past."I don't want to disappoint any more of the more hyperactive savvy fans that love nothing more than the fact that the show is completely unpredictable," Harmon first told TVGuide.com at the end of Season 2. "I have to continue a promise to the audience to always engage them in every part of their brain that love television. But at the same time I've got to get my mom more comfortable with the show."But doesn't an elaborate song-and-dance routine fly in the face of that? "There's a narrative reason, a character-based reason why the best way to open the show is with an illustration of how good things can be," Harmon says. "It's in contrast [with how last season ended], and it's to illustrate the contrast. It was an opportunity to sing and dance for people since that's hot now and also tell our story."Community Season 3 spoilers: Annie's rival, Jeff's father and Chang's... rise to power?Indeed, last season ended with a somewhat gloomy cliff-hanger when Pierce (Chevy Chase) told his cohorts he wouldn't return to the study group in the fall. As a new semester begins (Thursday, 8/7c, NBC), Pierce's chair still sits empty and that's worrying to everyone - except Jeff (Joel McHale). While the first episode attempts to bring the family back together, it sets up an emotionally challenging season for Mr. Winger."[Jeff's] going to learn the price of being in love with a group of people and having a real family," Harmon says. "It's not all positives. There's a social contract that needs to be made with the community where, if it's providing for you, it's also taking from you. If it's the third chapter of a four-chapter story for him, then this is the chapter that needs to be the most painful."That pain will extend into the classroom as well, where Jeff will butt heads with biology professor Kane (The Wire's Michael K. Williams), an ex-con with little patience for Jeff's antics. "I want to see what it's like to have a real person teaching at Greendale - somebody who's not cartoonishly afflicted with some kind of fable ... [that] makes them unqualified to teach," Harmon says. "I wanted to... present a teacher who maybe represents a viable risk academically. He can pass you or fail you, and that's how you will get through this year." John Goodman signs on as Community's new deanThe show is also bringing in John Goodman, who plays Vice Dean Laybourne, the head of Greendale's air conditioning repair annex. "He's sort of the Dick Cheney of Greendale," Harmon says. "He's a guy who appreciates real power over perceived power. He has been sort of sitting behind the scenes and is very content that way. But this year, Dean Pelton [Jim Rash] pulls that tail and activates him and finds out very quickly that the real guy in charge is [Laybourne]."Laybourne will begin to interact with the rest of the group when the air conditioning repair school approaches Troy (Donald Glover) to join up. And yet again, Jeff will be threatened. "Little Troy is growing up, Harmon says. "Troy is certainly heir to the throne of alpha male, so there's going to be that natural organic energy of conflict that happens between the silverbacks and the branch crashers as we say in primatology."As for the rest of the group, Abed (Danny Pudi) and Troy will be roommates. Annie (Alison Brie) will square off with a rival that reminds her a bit too much of her former self, and Britta (Gillian Jacobs) will finally declare her major to mixed reactions from the group. And Chang (Ken Jeong) somehow ends up working as Greendale's security guard.Community taps The Wire's Michael K. Williams to teach biologyMeanwhile, both Shirley (Yvette Nicole Brown) and Pierce will look to get serious about making a name for themselves in business. "[Pierce is] going to start trying to emerge from his father's shadow," Harmon says. "He was an heir to the moist towelette company, and so everything that was special that he ever accomplished was kind of handed to him. So, he's going to become kind of obsessed with making his own mark."Even with the promise of having less of what Dean Pelton calls "National Lampoon-ery" this season, Harmon promises a show that previous fans will still find plenty to laugh about. And that's probably because, despite what the season's opening number tells you, the show is going to be as crazy as it ever was."I never know what the hell I'm doing," Harmon says with a laugh. "I can promise the network and the studio. 'Yeah, we're going to be totally normal this year.' That's what the opening song's about. But they're singing it and dancing. The insanity is going to be a little more deeply ingrained this year. It's going to be like the marble pattern in the meat. It's going to be in everything making it hopefully delicious and sizzling."Community premieres Thursday at 8/7c on NBC.
